Wrestling expects ‘battle’ at EMU Duals

Wrestling has its hands full when it takes on two nationally ranked teams and one of the best teams in Div. III wrestling.

The Huskies (0-3) will partake in the EMU Duals Sunday in Ypsilanti, Mich. They take on the Olivet Comets 9 a.m., the Edinboro Fighting Scots 10:30 a.m., the Chattanooga Mocs noon and the Clarion Golden Eagles 1:30 p.m.

The Huskies started the 2013 season at the EMU Duals and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

The first of the Huskies’ four meets is against Div. III opponent Olivet. The Comets earned a spot in the NCAA DIII National Championships last season, finishing in 20th.

“Regardless of divisions, wrestling is wrestling,” said head coach Ryan Ludwig. “There are top-notch wrestlers in every division. You prepare for them just like you would any Div. I opponent, and you just got to be ready for battle.”

The second matchup for the Huskies will be against Edinboro. The Fighting Scots began the season No. 10 in the nation before losing to the 14th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.

The third meet will be against Chattanooga, which is getting its first action of the season this weekend.

The Mocs finished 16-7 last year and placed first in the Southern Conference Tournament.

The then-No. 24 Mocs went to the NCAA tournament and placed 42nd on the first day and 51st on the second.

“Chattanooga is a perennial SOCON power,” Ludwig said. “They always got guys qualifying for the national tournament, so we’re just preparing for them the same way [we] would for any other dual: just focusing on ourselves and our attacks and shot defense and making sure we got things in line for this weekend.”

The Huskies will finish up the EMU Duals against Clarion. NIU picked up a 21-15 victory over the Golden Eagles last year in the EMU Duals.
