The women’s golf team had its best two rounds of the season, but finished Tuesday’s Kangaroo Invitational with a 313 to total 932 for a fourth-place finish out of nine teams.

Danielle Lemek from Bradley University was the top finisher from the field of 60, carding a 220.

The Huskies’ 308 during the first round was NIU’s lowest score of the year.

Casey LaBarbera had her best tournament of the season, shooting 232 for the three rounds (76- 74- 82) to take 13th place out of 60.

“She did a good job of coming up with a good score for us,” said head coach Kim Kester. “She did extremely well.”

NIU had three of the next four spots. Freshman Sydney Brickey was right behind LaBarbera in 14th, shooting a 234 (80-79-75). Senior Jenny Niemiec tied Brickey for 14th, carding a (74-80-80).

Taylor Ellett was one stroke behind Brickey and Niemiec, totaling a 235 to tie for 16th. Ellett shot an opening round of 81 and got better as the tournament went, hitting in a 78 and 76.

Sophomore Sam Coyne, NIU’s top finisher from the Cougar Classic, did not have her best outing, taking 39th place (78-87-86) with a 251.

“We see the potential that we have on our team,” Kester said. “Casey stepped up this tournament. It has been somebody different each time, and any one of our girls can step up at any given time. I’m looking forward to see where we end up.”

NIU takes back to the course on Oct. 7 for the fall preview at the Hawthorns Golf Club in Fishers, Ind.
