The newly elected City Council will be seated at a special meeting today.

Circuit Court Judge Thomas Doherty will swear in the new council members–second ward alderman-elect Bill Finucane, fourth ward alderman-elect Robert Snow, sixth ward alderman Dave Baker and mayor-elect John Rey–at the ceremony. City clerk-elect Liz Peerboom will also be sworn in.

Finucane said although he has been consistently attending council meetings for some time, he looks forward to learning about the intricacies involved with the decision-making process.

“I’m excited to finally get in there and start working and moving forward,” Finucane said. “I look forward to working the build the relationship between the city and the university further and moving ahead with that process.”

Snow said he is ready to start working with the council.

“I’m excited to be in a position to help with decision making in the city,” Snow said.

Snow said he is thankful his constituents have given him the opportunity to represent them on the council.

Rey has worked with Mayor Kris Povlsen to learn about major issues that the city faces.

“Kris Povlsen has done a good job transitioning,” Rey said. “We’ve been working together on a number of issues relating to the city. Kris has been very diligent in bringing me up to speed in several issues to make sure we don’t miss a step.”

Rey said he is ready to begin serving the city as mayor, starting with the budget hearing May 11. The budget will allow the council to be proactive from the start, Rey said.

“We go into budget hearing this next weekend,” Rey said. “May 11 is a budget workshop of Fiscal Year ’14. Council has also begun discussing the search process for a new city manager…. We’re at a pivotal junction with new leadership in the city and the university, and I look forward to moving things ahead.”
