Softball to participate in benefit tournament

The Huskies will be out on the road again this weekend in Boca Raton, Fla., participating in the FAU Strike Out Cancer tournament.

Fans who attend the games will have the opportunity to make a $10 donation to the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute and will receive a pink T-Shirt in return to support “striking out” cancer.

The tournament includes five games against the University of North Florida, Providence College, Towson University, Connecticut College, and Florida Atlantic University.

NIU’s first game will be against the University of North Florida Ospreys, who are entering the tournament (8-3).

Junior outfielder Ashley Holton leads North Florida with a batting average of .353 as well as a total of 12 hits and seven runs batted in.

Holton scored a game-winning run with no outs in the eighth inning against Oakland University on Wednesday.

Another top North Florida player, sophomore catcher Jackie Reese, started in 54 games as a catcher last season with 361 putouts, ranking her fifth on UNF’s single-season list.

Reese has started off her season with six caught stealing, 69 put outs and 11 assists.

NIU now (3-2) plans on continuing its momentum from the Getterman Classic while taking on North Florida University on Friday.

Shelby Miller, NIU junior left fielder, believes that no matter a team’s record or statistics, there is an equal chance of success or failure.

“Any given day no matter who you play there is a chance you or they can win,” Miller said. “No matter their ranking or record we play by working off of our own strengths.”

This weekend, the Huskies plan on taking their hard work and practice to the field. Though there will be some minor adjustments, head coach Christina Sutcliffe believes the players will be able to adjust to the field.

“We are going to try and improve in the small areas from this past weekend, and since we are from the north we don’t get to practice outside,” Sutcliffe said. “We are used to the turf surface of our practice field.”

The Huskies have been preparing with two-and-a-half hour practices each day, gaining their strength through conditioning.

Senior Jennifer Barnett earned Getterman’s Classic all-tournament team honors last weekend after batting .385.

Barnett believes the team’s hard work in practice will definitely show while the huskies are playing.

“We are going to let what we have been practicing take over the field,” Barnett said.
