Student organizations will now be able to restrict membership, though they will lose Student Association funding if they choose to do so.

The SA Senate passed a bill Sunday allowing student organizations to maintain their status as an SA-recognized organization while deciding who can join them. If they choose to have restrictive membership, they will not receive funding from the SA.

In the past, SA-recognized organizations could not restrict membership or require dues if they were funded by the SA, with the exception of governing councils and Greek organizations, said Senator Mike Theodore.

The Senate passed a bill allowing students running for the position of student trustee position to qualify if they achieve the required academic standing by the time they take office. Senator Eli Mackenzie expressed concern over candidates who may fail this new requirement.

“If they had to be replaced and appointed, then all of the sudden you’re losing the input of voters,” Mackenzie said.

SA Senate Speaker Austin Quick said in his report that men’s rugby was disqualified from a tournament Saturday. The $6,000 in supplemental funding they requested for the tournament is planned to be returned to the SA. Supplemental funding will stand at $20,150 if the funding is returned.

Director of Academic Affairs Teresa Bozikis said in her report that faculty and students will present their essays on what they believed in for the “This I Believe” event 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carl Sandburg auditorium.

The American Society of Safety Engineers and Professional Convention Management Association received recognition. Isaac Palma was inducted as a new senator. Cara Prock was appointed Chief of Staff by the Senate. Eight senators were absent.

SA Senate will not meet April 8 in observance of Easter.
