SA Senate censures treasurer

A resolution to censure Student Association (SA) Treasurer Jeremy Sanchez was passed by the SA Senate Sunday.

Sanchez failed to give a complete budget for the 2012-2013 academic year past deadline last Thursday, Senate Speaker Austin Quick said. One of the duties of the treasurer is assisting in the preparation of student organization budgets for Senate approval. The treasurer is a paid position with a $15,000 annual salary.

“We’ve been talking all year about holding everyone on campus accountable,” Quick said. ”We can’t do our own job, and I find that very unfortunate.”

In the past two weeks, multiple emails were sent to Sanchez reminding him of the deadline for submitting the budget with no response, Quick said. After Quick sent out a few more reminders, he was assured Sanchez would turn in the budget on time by SA advisers. Last Friday, Quick said he received a flash drive from Sanchez with student organization budgets. The budget was incomplete and had mistakes.

One of the mistakes made by Sanchez was the salary of the director for student legal assistance, Quick said. The university approved an 1 percent salary increase for campus employees and Sanchez recommended a decrease in salary for the director in his budget.

“This was a culmination of bad planning, bad judgment and poor communication,” Quick said.

Senator Phillip Jones asked why Sanchez was not being removed. Quick said Sanchez could be removed, but the process would take too long.

Senator Zach Fiegel asked what processes were in place to make sure Sanchez is doing his job. Quick said every time he spoke with Sanchez, everything seemed fine. SA President Elliot Echols said the officers in the executive branch keep track of each other by meeting once a week to review what each person was doing.

The Senate approved a bill to update the names of Greek governing councils. Senator Paul Julion was appointed director of athletics. A resolution to hold senate speaker elections passed; Quick and Senator Mike Theodore receiving nominations.

The Senate took a moment of silence for National Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Four Senators were absent from the meeting.
