Northern Star wins awards at ICPA convention

The Northern Star took home 16 individual awards and an honorable mention in general excellence Sunday at the Illinois College Press Association convention.

Several current and former staff members won individual awards for their contributions to the paper. Campus Editor Kelly Bauer won first place in feature page design, and columnist Dan Martynowicz won first place in the non-film critical review category.

Advertising representative Alec Dudgeon won second place for advertisement less than a full page.

Staff writer Kyla Gardner received second place in the news story category. Gardner, with Editor in Chief Kim Skibinski and Managing Editor Leah Spagnoli, was part of a team which won second place for front page design over three consecutive issues.

Photographer Jerry Burnes received second place for a sports news story and alumnus Kyle Nabors received third place in the same category. Sports Editor Jimmy Johnson and alumnus Chris Dertz received third place for a sports game story. Burnes also received second place for a sports feature story, and Nabors received second place in the sports page design category. Videographer Jack Baker placed third in the sports column category.

Photographer Erik Anderson received third place in the feature photo category.

Northern Star alumni Jessica Sabbah and Jason Pfrommer placed third in the online publication category.

Four staff members also received honorable mentions in various categories.
