Pumpkin farms offer Halloween fun this season

Pumpkin farms in the DeKalb area are offering a variety of fall activities.

Many of the places people can pick pumpkins will be familiar to those who are familiar with apple orchards because the same orchards sometimes grow both crops. Pumpkin pickers are in luck, because the pumpkins did not suffer the same fate as the apples, and there are plenty of pumpkins left for picking.

The farm closest to DeKalb is Jonamac Orchard, located at 19412 Shabbona Road, in Malta. It offers pick your own pumpkins at the price of three for $10, with a minimum of $10.

“I went to get my pumpkins here because their website is easiest to navigate,” said Zhizi Li, freshman nursing major.

Although pumpkin picking is one of the main reasons why people come to Jonamac’s, it offers a variety of other activities.

Its corn maze is open on Friday and Saturday nights Oct. 22, 23, 29, and 30 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. This year’s maze is a tribute to the Boy Scouts of America and features its crest as the design.

The corn maze turns into an activity for adults to enjoy once nighttime comes. The haunted corn maze is offered from dark until 10:30 p.m. on Fridays, and Saturdays and until 9 p.m. on Sundays.

“We got so lost, you would not believe it,” Li said “I was pretty scared.”

The maze includes a variety of spooky events and scary moments. Admission to the haunted maze is $10 for people over the age of 13 and $8 for those under 12.

“Me and my boyfriend went into this maze,” said Jasmine Crespo, freshman sociology major. “I thought it was a good scare.”

Another pumpkin destination is Kuipers Family Farm, 1N318 Watson Road, Maple Park. The farm is open through Oct. 31 except on Mondays. A haunted forest, pony rides, and a petting zoo are a few of the activities to be enjoyed here. Kuipers also has a corn maze, this one in the shape of a giant Uncle Sam. General admission is $8.75 on weekdays and $10.75 on weekends and rides cost extra.

Located a bit further away from DeKalb than Kuipers Farm is Honey Hill Orchards,11747 Waterman Road in Waterman, is another alternative. A smaller family farm, they offer pumpkin picking, hay rides and horse-drawn carriage rides. Admission is free, and the only things besides the shop’s pumpkin donuts that have to be paid for are the carriage rides. Pumpkins are priced at 35 cents per pound.
