The Rant: Jan. 14

By BEN GROSS

Many people don’t retire at the age of 53.

But then again, most people aren’t Tony Dungy.

It was sad to see the man with 31 seasons in the NFL say goodbye. But Dungy, unlike some of us — including myself at times –, realizes that sports are not the only part of life. There is more, such as family.

The retirement of Dungy will hurt more than just his players, including former NIU offensive lineman Ryan Diem, the Colts or the fans. His retirement hurts the entire NFL.

Not only is the league losing a talented coach, but a classy, friendly and caring ambassador of the sport.

He, more than anyone else, has earned his retirement.

Enjoy your time with your family, Mr. Dungy. I hope you aren’t a stranger to the league.
