Women’s soccer team still undefeated

After a wet weekend, to say the least, the NIU women’s soccer team returns to DeKalb still undefeated.

The Huskies (3-0-3) played to a scoreless deadlock in DeKalb against Valparaiso Friday afternoon, and tied at Western Illinois 1-1 on Sunday.

“It was an overall good weekend,” said NIU head coach Carrie Barker. “We’d rather win than tie, but they gave everything they had.”

Record rainfall pouring into Illinois played a major factor in the outcome of both games. Barker mentioned how the water on the field rose to the players’ ankles, which made it difficult to pass the ball.

WIU adjusted to the conditions a little quicker than the Huskies, scoring just over two minutes into the match. Sophomore Becca Ford tied the game in the game’s 78th minute, sending the match into overtime.

“We lost focus that first three minutes today and that cost us the win,” Barker said. “We didn’t come out thinking about the wet conditions.”

Ford agreed. The sophomore, who tallied her third goal of the year, said it took a while to get used to the pitch.

“After about five minutes we got used to the conditions and we just played our game from there,” Ford said. “It was kind of fun. We would try to pass the ball and you’d think it would keep rolling, but it just stopped.”

Friday’s match was not much drier than Sunday’s as the Huskies played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. NIU outshot the Crusaders 13-7 while goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock recorded four saves in the match.

After finally drying off, the Huskies head back to DeKalb to prepare for another weekend. NIU looks for ways to get over the hump and get some more Ws in the standings.

“The wins will eventually come as long as we stick to the game plan,” Barker said. “We need to start and end the game strong and stay focused the entire game.”
