Women’s soccer still unbeatable

NIU women’s soccer looks to continue to let the good times roll.

The Huskies (3-0-1) host Valparaiso (4-1) at 2 p.m. Friday and travel to Western Illinois (1-2) for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.

NIU is off to its best start under a first-year coach in program history.

Last weekend, the Huskies extended their unbeaten streak to a school record 11 games with an overtime victory Sept. 5 and a scoreless tie Sept. 7.

“We had a long weekend last weekend and we’re just making sure our bodies are recovered enough for the weekend coming up,” said head coach Carrie Barker. “Every weekend we’re challenged in different ways but it’s great to be back on our home field.”

NIU is 6-0 all-time against Valparaiso but Barker said she has not seen the Crusaders in her career.

The Huskies share a 1-1-1 record with WIU, with the Westerwinds pulling out a 1-0 victory in 2007.

Senior Thea Johnson looks to continue her success this weekend. The midfielder leads the offense with nine points and three goals.

Sophomore Becca Ford follows with two goals in the Huskies first four games.

On the defensive side, goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock holds a .46 goals against average with three shutouts this season.

NIU has been successful on the pitch but Barker does not want the team to lose focus.

“I want us to start strong and play a full 90 minute game,” Barker said. “Against Northern Iowa, we let them back into the game and had to get our result in overtime. We just need to come out and play a full 90 minute game. That’s the biggest focus this weekend.”
