Top 10 athletes of 2007-2008: No. 1 Larry English

After being named the MAC Most Valuable Player, it’s only appropriate that defensive end Larry English receives the Northern Star’s top honor as well.

English recorded a conference best 10.5 sacks to go along with 17 tackles for a loss. He finished tied for 11th in the nation in sacks, which helped him become just the second defensive player to earn MAC MVP honors.

The Aurora native points to NIU’s win against Idaho as his highlight of the year. In the 42-35 victory, English had 12 tackles and a sack.

“Walking off the field after that first win was the best part of last season,” English said. “It was just relief to get that win.”

The best news for NIU fans may be that English isn’t entirely pleased with his performance from last season.

“At times I was happy, but I’m also my biggest critic,” he said. “Right now I’m concentrating on topping the work I put into last season. A lot of it is mental and I’m getting ready for that.”
