A trip east this weekend resulted in another road loss for the women’s basketball team.

The Huskies (8-14 overall, 4-5 MAC) fell 85-65 to defending MAC Champion Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon.

“We shot well out of the gate, but we had a lapse at some point and they went ahead,” head coach Carol Owens said.

NIU began the game on a positive note, down only one point with 10:33 left in the first half. The Falcons (17-6, 6-3) then made a couple of runs and mounted a 43-31 halftime lead.

The Huskies shot 39 percent from the field in the first half. Forward Whitney Lowe scored 11 of her 15 points in the game’s first 20 minutes. Guard Shari’ Welton scored a career-high 17 points while shooting 6-8 from the floor.

But BGSU dominated the paint, scoring 40 points in front of the basket. Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by forward Tara Breske. The sophomore scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

“We did a poor job of being aware of where [Breske] was on the floor,” Welton said. “We kind of lost her. She got a lot of easy layups and easy put-backs.”

NIU committed 24 turnovers in the contest, 14 of which came in the second half.

“We lost to a very good team,” Owens said. “I hope we find it within ourselves to come out aggressive and ready to play come Wednesday.”
