It’s gut-check time for the women’s basketball team

A huge test looms as the NIU women’s basketball team hits the interstate in search of its first road win.

NIU (6-12 overall, 2-3 MAC) squares off with Miami (Ohio) Saturday at 1 p.m. The Huskies come off a 69-49 win over Toledo Wednesday and look to continue that success in Oxford, Ohio.

“We need to experience success on the road,” said NIU head coach Carol Owens. “We’ve got to carry over some things we do well at home. It’s a mentality that we have to have.

“I think we’re learning how important it is to play at that level and play with that energy that’s so important to have when you’re away from your campus.”

Fresh off a win over Bowling Green Tuesday, Miami (11-8, 3-2) is led by guard Amanda Jackson. The senior is averaging 23 points a game this season.

“She’s a really good player,” Owens said. “We’re going to try and mix it up against her but she’s not the only player we’ve got to concentrate on.”

On the defensive end, the RedHawks feature 6-foot-2 forward Laura Markwood. The senior is averaging 10 rebounds and two steals a game.

Huskie forward Whitney Lowe has stepped up big for the Huskies in MAC play. The senior is averaging 15 points a game against conference opponents.

With the season coming to a close, the Huskies are starting to feel the pressure mount. After Saturday’s matchup, there are five games remaining on the schedule for NIU to make a run and gain momentum for the playoffs.

“I have a few more months left here with my teammates,” Lowe said. “There are no more second chances. This is my last year here. It’s go-time.”
