Five minutes with basketball player Whitney Lowe

By DERRICK SMITH

The Northern Star caught up with the lone senior on the NIU women’s basketball team, Whitney Lowe.

Lowe took time away from the court to discuss topics ranging from potato chips to spelling.

Northern Star: What’s the most interesting thing about your hometown, Bushnell, Ill?

Whitney Lowe: We make our own potato chips. They’re called “Kitchen Cook Potato Chips” and they’re amazing. They actually sell them at Wal-Mart here in DeKalb.

NS: How are they different from Lays?

WL: They’re thicker and not as salty. They’re absolutely amazing but that’s probably because I grew up with them.

NS: What’s your best talent outside of athletics?

WL: I really like to draw floor plans for homes. In high school I took two drafting classes. I want to design my own house eventually one day. I think I’m pretty good at that.

NS: It’s been rumored you were a spelling bee champion in seventh grade; any truth to that?

WL: Yeah, I was spelling bee champ at one time. In second grade I learned how to spell encyclopedia. That was like the biggest milestone ever.

NS: Spell Mauvolyene (freshman forward Mauvolyene Adams).

WL: I call her “Mauvo”, but M-A-U-V-O-L-E-N-E.

NS: Just missed it.

WL: No? Well let’s just not tell her.

NS: Why did you choose speech as your major?

WL: My major is speech pathology and audiology. I’m really interested in individuals who have hearing impairments and cochlear implants. I want to be an audiologist.

NS: What types of classes are you taking for that?

WL: Communicative disorders. I take a fine language. Also counseling classes for parents who have children who verbally aren’t able to communicate and help people with speech impediments.

NS: If you weren’t playing basketball, what club would you join?

WL: I would definitely join the volleyball team. I love volleyball.

NS: How about non-sports-related?

WL: I would probably join a cooking club because I can’t cook. Maybe a spelling club.
