Raymond seen as a top guard in WNBA Draft

DeKALB | NIU may not be the last stop in Stephanie Raymond’s basketball career.

The senior guard and Rockford native is being considered a top point guard prospect entering the upcoming WNBA Draft, according to several WNBA player personnel departments.

“I’ve always thought Stephanie was one of the top point guards in the country,” NIU head coach Carol Owens said. “It’s nice to see her get the recognition she deserves.”

Raymond finished her final season ranked fifth on NIU’s all-time scoring list, compiling 1,721 points. She led the Huskies in scoring with just under 19 points per game this past season, earning MAC Player of the Week honors three times.

Owens feels Raymond’s game could translate well to the professional level.

“She’s talented enough to be in the league,” Owens said. “She’s the type of point guard teams are looking for.”

The 2007 WNBA Draft will be televised live at noon on ESPN2 April 4.
