World music show exhibits folk, traditional sounds

The Spring World Music Concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Music Building’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.

Kuo-Huang Han, concert organizer and director, said the concert will be a fun experience for the NIU community.

“The world music concert is more than music itself,” Han said. “It is more cultural and educational.”

Han, who has worked at NIU for 33 years, said the majority of concerts are Western classical, band or jazz.

“This concert is unique in presenting folk and traditional music from many parts of the world,” Han said. “There are not too many colleges in the U.S. that offer concerts of so many cultures.”

NIU has had one or two large-scale concerts like the Spring World Music Concert every year since 1975, Han said.

Although most concerts are perceived as being serious, Han said this concert should be fun.

“Some concerts at NIU, such as world music, steel band and Klezmer Band, actually are very relaxed,” Han said. “For world music concerts, families with children are welcome.”

Han said the concert is like an outdoor festival inside a building.
