NIU’s Sapp wins MAC Wrestler of the Week

By Jason Watt

Freshman Joe Sapp was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week after the biggest win of his short career at NIU.

Sapp upset 18th-ranked Jeremiah Beltran to help lead the Huskies to a win over MAC rival Ohio on Sunday. The victory was his first over a MAC opponent and his first over a ranked opponent. The win also snapped a personal four match losing streak for Sapp.

The Huskies’ win over Ohio kept them undefeated in conference meets.

“This is a tremendous and much-deserved award for Joe,” NIU coach Dave Grant said. “A win like that not only gives Joe a tremendous amount of confidence, but gives our team a lot of confidence. To get a win like that, heading into next week’s match with Central Michigan, is great.”

Sapp is the second Huskie to be named MAC Wrestler of the Week. Ben Heizer, the nationally ranked 184-pounder, also won the award on Dec. 9.

The Huskies’ next meet will be Friday when they travel to face preseason MAC favorite Central Michigan.
