Ladies fighting back

Girls Fight Back – that’s the theme of the self-defense event sponsored by Alpha Phi at 7 p.m. tonight at the Student Recreation Center.

Janice Galon is the vice president of chapter operations for Alpha Phi.

She said she thinks it is important to have events like this on campus to help educate women about self-defense.

“I think this is a really important presentation because there are women who feel unsafe on campus,” Galon said. “This is a way for them to not feel afraid to walk down the street by themselves.”

Although this is the first year Girls Fight Back is taking place on campus, Galon said she feels confident the event will help women.

“I think these kinds of events are really important because it provides awareness that [violence] happens on campus,” Galon said.

Erin Weed is an Alpha Phi member from a different chapter whose friend was killed in an assault.

“She is going to help teach self-defense,” Galon said. “Her friend was murdered, and this is a way for her to educate openly to women.”

Galon said she is confident the presentation will be an interactive experience for women.

“Girls will be able to help demonstrate and get involved to perform the defense movements,” Galon said.

The event is open to all women.
