Indonesian experience planned for Friday

The Southeast Asia Club is having an Indonesian cultural night to give students a chance to experience Indonesian culture.

Indonesian night is an evening dedicated to introducing other cultures to Indonesian lifestyles, said Mary Byker, Southeast Asia Club external vice president.

The event will take place at 5 p.m. Friday at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 512 Normal Road.

Authentic Indonesian food will be available, but it must be ordered by Tuesday. It is $5 for club members and $6 for non-members.

“We hope that people will learn more about Indonesia and the tribes there. There are a lot of different cultures, villages and customs in Indonesia,” club member Tia Hendio said.

Southeast Asian music will be played, and dancers from Bali will perform. Hendio will perform a gong dance called Bayaknese.

There also will be a fashion show modeling clothing from different areas in Indonesia, and a trivia game on Indonesian knowledge.

Byker expects a good-sized crowd of mixed cultures.

“We hope people will leave with more knowledge about Indonesia and that they will realize Indonesia is a nice place,” Hendio said.
