NIU Football signee back in school

Former Mount Carmel football player and NIU recruit Greg Owens has re-enrolled at school.

Owens, who dropped out of Mt. Carmel in February after allegedly being accused of stealing from lockers at the school, has enrolled at Chicago Hales Franciscan High School, said NIU coach Joe Novak.

All of the class credits from Hales will transfer and Owens will graduate from Mt. Carmel, despite finishing at Hales.

Owens will enter NIU as a non-qualifier and will not practice or play with the team next season.

As a non-qualifier, a student must earn a 2.0 grade point average and complete at least 24 credit hours during his freshman year in college.

The 5-foot-10 running back will have three years of athletic eligibility unless he graduates in four years, then a fourth year of athletic eligibility can be earned.

Owens originally was not recruited by NIU, but he contacted coach Novak with an interest to play for the Huskies. At the time, NIU had a spot open and Owens signed with NIU.

Owens will not be on scholarship next season.

While at Mt.Carmel, Owens led the Caravan to a Class 6A State Title last season while collecting 174 carries for 1,721 yards and 17 touchdowns, accumulating a 9.9 yard per carry average.
