Bash welcomes new Huskies

NIU students new and old were greeted with a bash on their first day back at campus.

The fifth-annual Huskie Bash kicked off the academic year Thursday. While traditionally held at Huskie Stadium, this year’s bash was held at the new $35.8 million Convocation Center.

NIU President John Peters, who spoke to a full house, said he wanted to “raise the roof on this new Convocation Center,” as he officially opened the 10,000-seat arena with a red, black and white balloon drop.

“It’s awesome,” senior finance major Gina Wemger said of the new center.

A large crowd flooded the arena and made walking nearly impossible near the dozen food booths.

Crowds also were entertained with live local acts like Maggie Speaks. The music kept Brant Mackall, a freshman business administration major, interested in the free event.

“They’re pretty good,” Mackall said of the band.

The bash also featured members of Mercy Hearts Clowns. The clown troupe out of Yorkville, Ill., twisted animal-shaped balloons and joked around to the amusement of many.

“Good music, lots of food, mingling. That’s all you need … and clowns,” said one clown, Yippee Skippee, about the bash.

Despite the clowns and the food, not every student could get into the Huskie spirit.

“I wouldn’t go if it wasn’t free,” said Brant Wynn, a sophomore time arts major.
