Tennis comes back

For the NIU men’s tennis team, this season truly has been a trial.

The Huskies started out the year 0-4, and faced a slew of ranked opponents, all of whom dominated the courts. For the past two games however, a reverse in this trend has occurred, and the Huskies have turned their record around to 2-4 after a win this weekend against the University of Northern Iowa.

NIU won the event by a score of 5-2, with wins coming from all across the board. The Huskies took the first point of the day by taking the first two doubles flights and grabbing the doubles point. The combinations of Aaron Forsberg and Raymond Van Wasbeek, and Brent Sitarski and Juan Pablo Barriga both came out on top for the Huskies.

In the singles matches, Van Wasbeek, at No.1; Barriga, at No.2; Forsberg at the fourth seed; and Tim Freesen at the sixth all capitalized and defeated their opponents to give the Huskies the win.

For Barriga, the win was his first of the season in the singles events. Freesen was battling through minor injuries, but managed to come up big for the Huskies.

NIU coach Steve Rodecap was very pleased with the performance of his team.

“It was a good win for us, we did everything we had to do,” Rodecap said. “Our guys did a great job competing for every point. It was nice that Juan Pablo Barriga got his first win. Aaron Forsberg was composed and played well at No. 4 singles.”

The Huskies will attempt to lengthen their winning streak when they take on Valparaiso University on Friday in Indiana. On Saturday, the dogs will travel to Normal to take on Illinois State University at 7 p.m.
