DeKALB — The NIU football, men’s basketball and men’s golf teams are under quarantine after each had members of the program test positive for COVID-19, the NIU Athletic Department announced Friday.

The positive results came during weekly surveillance testing in cooperation with the DeKalb County Health Department.

“Today’s measures are intended to limit potential transmission of the virus by further limiting in-person contact by the student-athletes on these three teams,” the Athletic Department wrote in the statement.

The statement also reveals NIU suspended organized team practices for all 17 of their programs on Sept. 11, coinciding with the universities decision to transition all classes online until Sept. 28.

The announcement comes after the Mid-American Conference presidents announced Thursday they would meet Saturday to discuss a potential fall football season. Previously the conference voted on Aug. 8 to postpone all fall sports.
