Schoebs’ sparks men’s tennis team

Andy Schoeberlein is becoming a whole new tennis player.

Tuesday, “Schoebs” accounted for two of the three NIU points in a 6-3 loss at Marquette.

Schoeberlein beat the Warriors’ Matt Tobin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 and teamed up with Dustin Dobrin to win No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-2.

“Schoebs carried us,” NIU coach Chuck Merzbacher said. “He played well, and he’s going to get a lot better.”

Schoeberlein took Merzbacher’s advice and moved his feet in the match. “I tend to be lazy,” Schoeberlein admitted. “So I have to bounce on my toes. It helps me anticipate the shot better.”

His aggressive play carried over to yesterday’s spirited practice. Schoeberlein hit freshman Matt Green with a vicious overhead during a drill. “I think I hit him four times today,” he said. “I hit Steve (Senter) twice, too. I’ve never hit so many people in one day.”

“Everyone,” Dustin Dobrin said, “was really hyped (yesterday).”

The loss at Marquette dropped NIU’s record to 8-14 on the season.
