Huskies fly by Redbirds, prepare for weekend trip

It was a gorgeous day for tennis Thursday and the NIU women’s tennis team came up with a beautiful 6-3 triumph over Illinois State University at the West Campus courts.

Hild Andersch, Jami Cheek, Svetlana Nedeljkovic and Breda Dean all gathered victories in their singles games to pace the Huskies’ way.

No. 2 netter Andersch had no trouble with the Redbirds’ Nicole Yardley, winning 6-2, 6-3.

No. 6 singles performer Dean turned in a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Iris Villavanda.

Cheek, NIU’s No. 3 singles player, won 6-1, 6-4 over Jamie Knight.

NIU’s Sarah Murfey gave ISU’s No. 1 singles player Michelle Greenan a test but Greenan proved to be too strong, handing Murfey a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 defeat.

Natalija Todorovic also dropped her match at No. 4 singles. ISU’s Janelle Crabtree won 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

Nedeljkovic was the only Huskie to come up with a three-set triumph, stopping the Redbirds’ Kathleen Westhoven 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

The Huskies also took two out of three doubles matches, with the wins coming from Cheek and Nedeljkovic (6-2, 6-4) and Todorovic and Dean (6-4, 6-3).

“This is a good way to start the weekend,” NIU coach Patty Groth said. “Everyone looked sharp on the courts. Sarah lost a tough match but I think she learned from it.”

NIU (9-6) is on the road this weekend, starting today at 3 p.m. at Valparaiso. NIU will then meet Akron Saturday and travel to Ball State on Sunday.
