DeKALB – The Northern Illinois Newspaper Association (NINA) and the Northern Illinois University Department of Communication will host NINA’s 60th Anniversary: A Rallying Cry For Northern Illinois Journalism, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 in Altgeld Hall 116.

Along with celebrating the 60th anniversary of NINA’s founding, the event will also aim to serve to promote, preserve, protect and celebrate quality journalism across northern Illinois.

NINA was founded in 1962 by Dr. Donald Grubb who was the longtime chairman of the former NIU Journalism Department. The department worked to promote newspapers in northern Illinois by developing programs for journalists.

The event will feature Kelly Bauer as the keynote speaker. Bauer was editor-in-chief at the Northern Star from 2012 to 2015 and is now the breaking news editor of Block Club Chicago and winner of the 2021 award for Chicago Journalist of the Year.

The celebration will also include a cash bar reception, dinner, other presentations and an awards ceremony. The event is open to all and will cost $40 to attend per person. To RSVP contact Shelley Hendricks, adviser of the Northern Star, at [email protected] or call 815-753-4239 no later than Oct. 14.
