‘About Schmidt’

By Genevieve Diesing | September 29, 2005

This is by far my favorite performance from Jack Nicholson because it is the most atypical for him. He plays Warren Schmidt - an aging, somewhat depressed widower who has nothing but time on his hands before his beloved daughter gets married to a guy he thinks is an utter creep. He wallows in depression about his daughter, late wife and the dissatisfaction of his retired life.

The best part of this film is the letters Schmidt writes to his pen pal Ndugu. Although Ndugu is a little boy in Africa whom Schmidt writes to along with providing financial sponsorship for him, Schmidt includes details and feelings in his letters that Ndugu could not possibly relate to. Instead, we see the frustration and despair Schmidt’s character does not know how to express.

The humor is subtle but insistent, and thanks to Nicholson’s amazing adaptability, "Schmidt" is a downright pleasure to watch.

Listen to the sounds of studying

By Seth Endres | September 26, 2005

It’s eerily silent, except for the sound of elevators going from floor to floor. The escalators have been turned off and people shift quietly from computers to their books. If you’re looking for a wild and crazy time, the Founders Memorial Library...

Sigur Ros: Takk

By Matt Lee | September 22, 2005

Music can be very disappointing sometimes. Sigur Ros’s new album, "Takk," is one of those disappointments. Unfortunately, calling this album a disappointment can’t be considered justice. Calling this album completely and utterly awful can’t be considered...
