Gilbert Hall could have asbestos problems

By Carlene Eck | March 27, 2007

The word "asbestos" can strike fear and paranoia into a person.

Fortunately, asbestos is not always a threat.

NIU has dealt with asbestos removal since 1986, and has encountered only one major complication in Health Services.

The university has not recently encountered any issues with asbestos in any campus buildings, said Scott Mooberry, safety officer of NIU Environment Health and Safety.

"Many of our buildings, especially those built in the ‘40s through the early ‘80s, do seem to contain building materials that contain asbestos," Mooberry said.

NIU has a plan, dubbed the "Asbestos Operations and Maintenance program," intended to help individuals work safely around asbestos, Mooberry said.

"Asbestos only becomes a problem when the materials are disturbed in such a manner that asbestos fibers could become airborne," Mooberry said.

Asbestos removal is included in NIU's renovation budget, but the university does not always have the financial means to remove the material.

The Illinois Capital Development Board, the construction management arm of the state government, may get involved. The board may state its wishes to remodel a space in a building and, if asbestos is found in the area, it will fund the removal. Asbestos removal can cost between $2-15 per square foot depending on the type of asbestos, Mooberry said.

When a renovation project is scheduled, asbestos removal occurs before other contractors come in. The goal of removing asbestos is to avoid exposing other workers to it, Mooberry said.
