Student reports sexual assault

October 23, 1989

One suspect

An NIU female student told the University Police Tuesday of a sexual assault that occurred in the early morning of Oct. 14 at the Stevenson Towers Complex.

The victim claimed she knew her assailant, but she has not signed a complaint, said UP Lt. Kathy Guimond.

The UPs have one suspect but no one in custody because the victim has not signed a complaint, Guimond said. Both of the people involved in the incident are NIU students, she said.

The victim has been informed of the possible routes to take through the Sexual Assault Response Team but has not contacted any other department of SART, Guimond said.

The last reported sexual assault on campus, which occurred Sept. 18, involved an NIU female student in Neptune Hall and a visitor from another campus. The suspect of the incident was released because the victim did not sign a complaint. The assailant was a member of a fraternity from another campus with an NIU branch, according to sources.

The UP department of the SART stopped investigating the Sept. 18 incident because the victim did not pursue any complaints against the assailant.

The investigation of the Oct. 14 incident is preceding at a "normal pace" and the UPs are questioning a "number of witnesses" to the incident, Guimond said.
