The IHSA football championships’ economic impact on DeKalb was $800,000, which is $200,000 less than what was projected. The money came from indirect and direct speding on hotels, food, gas, facility rental, tent suppliers, catering and other services provided by people attending the event, said Debbie Armstrong, executive director of the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

NIU students to help Egyptian Theatre with $2.5M in grants

The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., on Thursday before the movie showing and comedic performance of “Clue” on Friday. The theater is unable to maintain its operation during the summer due to a lack of air conditioning. NIU students are working on developing a plan to find grants for the theater to pay expenses.

Human Relations Commission to hold discussion on unlawful assembly ordinance

The DeKalb Human Relations Commission will hold a discussion regarding the unlawful assembly ordinance at its meeting Tuesday.

DeKalb’s unlawful assembly ordinance has moved to the Human Relations Commission for more public input after more than 15 people, including four NIU students and two NIU staff members, voiced their concerns at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The commission will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the DeKalb Municipal Building, Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St.

The meeting will be open for public comment.
