Play it safe with sports

September 18, 1990

Sex isn't the only activity in which the concept of "safer" has caught on. "Safer sports" represents a new era of fitness for students of the 90s who care about preventing injuries while having fun, competing, losing weight and engaging in athletics....

Twisted views

September 18, 1990

Did you specifically request Scott Stocking to write a controversial letter in order to boost activity on your editorial page? In the past two weeks I have seen two letters asking students to use this page to express their opinions. I find it interesting...

Bush hypocrisy

September 18, 1990

In face of Bush's preparations for what could become a long and bloody war, the most rapid military buildup in U.S. history and the mental preparations for a war coming from the media and the politicians, we must have a clear vision that doesn't fall...

Ridiculous view

September 18, 1990

I am writing in response to a letter which appeared in The Northern Star on Sept. 11 from Scott Stocking, a "campus minister". Frankly, I was enraged when I read this man's comments. First of all, one cannot boil morality and ethics into simple left and...

Cultural pluralism a big job

September 17, 1990

Student Association Academics Adviser Colleen Halliman has a big job to tackle, maybe too big. Halliman is continuing with plans to start a mandatory cultural pluralism class. This type of class is a needed one at all universities, and should be mandatory...

Missed the point

September 17, 1990

This letter is a response to both Tiffany Renee Weis' and Sam Lipkin's letters that addressed my earlier letter.

Both of you vehemently attack my character, telling me that I support discrimination against homosexuals because I suggested gay rights and human rights should not be billed together.

In your haste to label me discriminatory and ignorant, which is a trite and ineffective tactic, you both totally missed the point of the letter.

You both say that human and gay rights are inseparable. Well fine, but then why differentiate between the two in the first place? It just seemed to me that since it was GAY Awareness Week it would have made more sense to stay as focused as possible on that particular subject.

Tiffany, in your letter, you call me a homophobic after misinterpreting my letter and without ever having met me. I suggest you refrain using such typical insults on people who might offer an opinion other than one that is congruent to your own.

Also, you seemed to be angry at the fact that the ROTC is still allowed on campus because the government discriminates against homosexuals by not allowing them in the armed forces.

Why is it that to further the rights of homosexuals others must have their rights taken away? Tiffany, you probably don't think the people in the ROTC are human, do you? Do you think you're being discriminating towards them when you express your opinion to have the ROTC banned from campus? Do you think they don't have the RIGHT to go to SCHOOL because they are using an external way to pay for it? Will you be willing to pay for their education, Ms. Weiss?

I hope when you were wearing your jeans for HUMAN rights two weeks ago that the people who are in the ROTC program to help pay for school were human enough for you!

NIU needs to look ahead

September 17, 1990

Two pedestrian accidents in 1989 are the reason behind NIU and the city of DeKalb spending between $70 and $80,000. NIU and the city have delved into a joint venture to curb pedestrian traffic along Normal Road. A major reason for the venture being twn...

Found solution

September 17, 1990

There is a simple solution to the GLU and ROTC issue. The solution is to get rid of the NIU constitution. Last semester the NIU admissions office closed admissions for this semester to all white students of non-exceptional academic ability. The admissions...

All facts needed

September 17, 1990

In response to the letter to the editor in the Sept. 12 edition of The Northern Star entitled "Victims of the Press," we see no reason for the author's distress concerning the treatment of the three Omega Psi Phi members and their NIU-sponsored roadtrip....

No one injured in Wednesday’s fire

September 14, 1990

No one was hurt Wednesday night when a third floor Wirtz Hall fluorescent ceiling light burst into flames and caused about $1,000 in damage to the building. The light's faulty ballast, the built-in transformer that changes the building's electrical voltage...

All abuse wrong

September 14, 1990

In response to Vickie Snow's column of Sept. 11, there are many instances and forms of child abuse where the child does not end up physically dying as a result of the mistreatment. I doubt if those surviving children, who eventually will be or who are...

Blame altered

September 14, 1990

This is in response to Alfred Tatum's letter of Sept. 12. Mr. Tatum, you could not be more wrong. Nothing that the Star printed about the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's abuse of the university's credit card was out of line for a newspaper to print. When I...
