Immortality: Maybe it takes a little luck

By Dan O'Shea | April 22, 1990

I've been having these sudden attacks lately. One minute, I'm just sitting around, and the next, I could swear I was a 370-pound, Jewish woman stirring a giant, boiling vat of matzah-ball soup in her 1940s kitchen while yelling at her allergy-ridden son...

More effort needed in area of financial aid

April 22, 1990

Black Law Student Association I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America... We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal and are endowed by the creator with certain inalienable rights... I have a dream that...

NIU could learn from Dad

April 22, 1990

NIU should have known better. The old Arndt House is one of NIU's latest little household improvements, but things are already getting off to a slow start that could have been avoided. The Board of Regents said it needs an itemized list of expenditures...

Parking prices

April 22, 1990

It has been reported that the NIU Parking Committee voted to divert $100,000 of parking monies to the MLK Commons renovation. If The Star had correct facts, three parking spots would be created. The cost of each parking spot would then be $33,333. Does...

Spiritual answer

April 19, 1990

We are all aware of the evils of racism and become aware of, through the animal rights movement, the evils of speciesism (the belief that one species is superior to another). Prejudice, in whatever form, only causes suffering, and loss of benefit to society....

Black mythology

April 19, 1990

Attention NIU students, I'm black. That means if you turn your back on me I'll stab you or at least steal your money. It also means that I run fast and jump high. I love to eat chicken, and watermelon is my favorite. I'm not particularly smart, but I...

Give evidence

April 19, 1990

By now, Marilyn Montiero's indictment of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (Star, March 2) must have been dismissed by the court of public opinion for lack of evidence. She has utterly failed to produce any support for her charge that the college...

Would God ask us to let our kids die?

By Claudia Curry | April 18, 1990

What catches your eye when you're skimming through a newspaper? Me - the headlines. A good headline should introduce you to the story and arouse your interest to the point that you feel compelled to read on. Yes, I am guilty. If the headline and lead...

Progress made

April 18, 1990

I must address the inaccurate editorialship of The Northern Star. The editorial printed on Feb. 16 cited what The Star called "vanished ideas" of the Student Association: publishing teacher evaluations, the Student Committee on Financial Aid and the SA Recycling Center's productivity.

The fact is, these issues have not only not "vanished," but they have grown to heights of success.

Next month the University Council will decide on the SA's proposal to publish teacher evaluations.

The Student Committee on Financial Aid has created a Financial Aid Advisory Board, spurred the development of a receipt system, is providing rationale for an increase in budgets for students on financial aid, researched the cost of a computerized phone system to be included in the budget request, has brought pertinent information to students on aid via Star allowances, and is addressing student concerns of the FAAB on a consistent basis.

The Recycling Center Task Force is organizing efforts to maintain the center over upcoming breaks to avoid back-up when student volunteers leave. It accumulated so much material over break because of its tremendous success in recruiting students and community members to participate in its program.

This information was available to the editors via their own news stories or a telephone call. Unfortunately, students were misinformed.

The SA would like to reach you directly so that we can let you know how we are working for you. Tonight at 7 p.m. in the Capitol Room, the SA will be hosting a Student Forum in order to do just that. Members of the SA Executive Board, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a senator from your district will be able to answer your questions and tell you the facts about the SA's mission and agenda.

Keep help close to home

April 18, 1990

If NIU wants to clean up the asbestos in the University Health Center before it becomes a bigger problem, that's great. But considering a temporary location anywhere but on campus is ludicrous. Regular air samples indicate airborne asbestos levels in...

Earth Week is only a start

April 18, 1990

You too can help save the world. This seems to be the theme for Earth Week, along with the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day (this Sunday). OK, so about 25,000 students think about recycling for a week. This is good. Awareness of a problem, such as the destruction...

Report is unfair

April 18, 1990

It is quite ironic, and disheartening too, to hear that NIU teachers are lazy, cannot teach and are not doing well in research. This is absolute nonsense. It might well be that what the Illinois Board of Higher Education NIU faculty negative report means...
