Good intentions

October 2, 1989

I feel I owe a public apology for marching the Huskie Marching Band into the alley next to the Egyptian Theatre for a "pep fest." I felt so proud when the athletic and music department said they would cooperate with my "wish" to have the band and football...

Not semantics

October 2, 1989

I would like to respond to a letter from Keri Putnam (Sept. 28). In her letter, Putnam expresses the opinion that the factions in the debate over abortion should be labeled "pro-life" and "anti-life," and also states, "your choice might be murder." In...

Won’t hurt U.S. economy

October 2, 1989

No one likes to pay taxes, and no one likes to die. Above all, no one likes the rich folks out there getting a break on taxes. But wait a minute; hold the phone. Bar the door. With a reduction in capital gains taxes passed last week, many liberals are...

Up to individual

October 2, 1989

Please bear with one more letter on the pro-choice/life topic. I am writing in response to Fred Freund's letter that appeared in the Sept. 29 issue. Mr. Freund, when a woman "opens her reproductive system to intercourse," she usually does not do so with...

Class, not test

October 2, 1989

Congratulations on your editorial titled "Test can't provide education," of Sept. 28. You are correct that a crammed-for test cannot provide a quality educational experience. The constitutional test was, in my opinion, imposed by the state legislation on high schools of this state, and it has no place in higher education.

As you point out, however, all citizens of our state need information about the workings of their government and how they can influence the policy process. I support fully your call to have POLS 100 made a part of the core curriculum requirements and urge all students to make it part of their general education while here at NIU.

Campus to be proud of?

October 2, 1989

How many times have you walked through the NIU campus, passing well-tended trees and carefully manicured grass and flowers, only to trip over fast-food cartons, soda cans and old newspapers? Granted, all of us have "more important" things to think about...

Channel efforts

October 2, 1989

In response to a letter to the editor written by TR Biddle (Sept. 8) concerning Columbia and the drug war, I must tell Mr. Biddle to wake up and smell the (Columbian) coffee. He states that "if it wasn't for those greedy Columbian drug farmers, this country...

Human Rights Campaign

October 2, 1989

The Palestine Human Rights Campaign will hold its 12th annual conference in Chicago from Oct. 6-8. For more information call PHRC at (312) 987_1830. Exercise classes Exercise classes for DeKalb County Farm Bureau M and A_plus members begin Oct. 9. Low...

Student voice not heard

October 1, 1989

The Student Association's purpose is to represent all students at NIU. But, their recent actions in recommending Nick Valadez to fill the position of 7th Ward alderman with only a six person vote does not support this charge. The SA said they chose the...

A-Phi to help increase participation in events

By Michelle Isaacson | October 1, 1989

Alpha Phi sorority is trying to increase school spirit and participation in NIU athletics by sponsoring events with the athletic department. Dana Schmidt, Alpha Phi external public relations officer, said the sorority made an agreement with NIU's Intercollegiate...

Trash news hits ultimate low

October 1, 1989

What's it all about—Geraldo? Last week, Geraldo Rivera again tapped into his never-ending cesspool of inane television talk show garbage. It was difficult to believe, let alone stomach, the fact that an hour-long broadcast could be based on the social...

Real human life

September 28, 1989

I think it is ironic that the people who believe a woman has a right to an abortion call themselves pro-choice. A woman has many choices regarding motherhood. A woman has a choice whether or not she will have sex. If she chooses to have sex, she has a...
