Sports Faceoff: NFC Championship game

By Jimmy Johnson and Chris Dertz | January 20, 2011

Jimmy Johnson: Chris, I can't contain the excitement that is flying out of me about this game. I never thought in my lifetime that I'd get to see the Bears and Packers as the two remaining teams in the NFC. I'm guessing you share these sentiments as well?...

Feeding the fans: Eateries prepare for the NFC championship game

By Alex Fiore | January 20, 2011

With the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers meeting in the playoffs for the first time since 1941 on Sunday, people around DeKalb are getting prepared for the game. Restaurants and bars around DeKalb are preparing for a hectic couple of hours. "The staff...

NIU Alumnus Garrett Wolfe returns to Huskie Stadium

By Jerry Burnes | November 10, 2010

If NIU battling Toledo with MAC Championship implications wasn't enough of a throwback for Huskie fans, seeing former running back Garrett Wolfe on the sidelines must have maxed out the nostalgia meter. Wolfe, currently a running back for the Chicago...

The Rant: The Bears need to get off the bus running

By Korey Peterson | October 18, 2010

Usually when something isn't working right, it gets changed. It's time for the Bears to change it up, as they are not playing typical Chicago Bear football; a good defense supplemented by a running game that eats up the clock. The Seattle Seahawks played...

The Rant: Time to tune into America’s real pastime

By Jerry Burnes | October 14, 2010

I'll take a 1-0 start for the Bears, but in reality, they lost that game. Rules are rules, I know, but Calvin Johnson caught that final pass, and highlighted the minor intricacies - and problems- with football's terrible rules. "Megatron" had every aspect...

Todd Collins might want a few Tom Collins after that performance

By Korey Peterson | October 12, 2010

I will try my hardest to not bash you every week, Lovie Smith.

But why do you have to make it so easy? While the Bears won the game, no one should be proud of a victory over the hapless Panthers that had as many errors as the Bears did.

In post game interviews, Smith said the man he designated to start in place of the injured Jay Cutler, Todd Collins, was "in control early on." Lovie was right about that. I have never seen such artistic form and grace in his handoffs and pitches to Matt Forte.

Caleb Hanie should have started against Carolina. Collins ended up with four interceptions in just 16 pass attempts and a 6.2 passer rating. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz wanted a veteran quarterback to back up Cutler, but it would help if that veteran had the ability to play in the system that emphasizes timing and accuracy such as his.

And with an offensive line as atrocious as the Bears, the quarterback will have to be mobile. At least Hanie can run for his life faster than Collins could have.

The Rant: Bears in trouble

By Korey Peterson | October 5, 2010

Well, Lovie Smith, you should realize that you have a problem now. 24 defenses in the NFL do not have as many sacks as your team gave up this past Sunday night. The Bears nearly lost Jay Cutler for longer than just that game when his helmet smacked off...

RANT: Bear’s cheap win

By Jerry Burnes | September 12, 2010
