NIU fraternity Rush starts tonight and Greek officers said they expect hundreds of men to participate.

The men, called rushees, must visit fraternity houses from five different regions that are mapped out by the Interfraternity Council. There are 17 fraternities at NIU, each varying in the number of members and interests.

Delta Chi President Mike Hughes said this system was adopted so the rushees can get an “overview of the entire Greek System, and the houses get the chance to meet everyone that is rushing.”

“They get the chance to see a variety of the houses and what they have to offer,” Hughes added.

Most chapters are expecting between 50 and 100 men to turn out for the first night of activities.

IFC chairperson Piet Kef said weather is a factor during Rush. “The weather isn’t bad, so that’s a big plus for all chapters,” Kef said. “There is no snow, so hopefully won’t be postponed.”

About 600 men are expected to participate in Rush this week said Dawn Sturma, activities advisor for Greek affairs. The numbers for spring Rush are usually down a little from the fall, she added.

After it’s all over, Sturma said, a little over 200 are expected to affiliate with a chapter.

Sigma Nu Vice President Bob Gorman said the purpose of Rush is to meet potential new members. “The rushees are introduced to our members and taken on a tour,” Gorman said. “They get to know something about the house and the people.”

Each fraternity house runs their Rush in a different way. Delta Sigma Phi President Dan Farrell said his chapter is a little less formal. “We want guys to come out to Rush, have a good time, and be themselves,” Farrell said.

Kevin Koch, Rush chairman for Phi Kappa Theta, said Rush is the way the house members get to know the rushees. “If we feel we want them as a member we will extend a bid.”

As part of the IFC’s “dry Rush” policy, no alcohol is allowed during Rush, Kef said. In addition, he said there is a limit on the number of people not affiliated with the chapter allowed at the house.

Rush dates are tonight, Thursday and the following Tuesday. There is an optional day set up for Jan. 22. Rush begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. A Rush booklet is available at all the chapters and residence halls throughout Rush. It provides descriptions, general information and pictures.
