Career fair benefits ethnics

By Rebecca Keener

The Multi-Cultural Career Fair allowed students from all ethnic groups a chance to meet with prospective employers on Friday.

The fair went really well in spite of the weather, said Donna Simpson, ACCESS career counselor.

Students have been hired every year, with internships as well as full time positions, she said.

Brenda Tolar, a former NIU student who attended the job fair, is now on the other side of the fence at the job fair as a representative from Northern Trust Bank.

“I was interested in working for Northern Trust, but I wasn’t 100 percent sure, but when I attended the fair it gave me a lot of information that helped me make an educated decision,” Tolar said.

Tolar said the job fair also gives students the chance to ask questions and find out things about the company they couldn’t find from other sources.

The job fair not only benefits students but also prospective employers.

“It (the fair) is a great introduction for employers to Northern,” said Monique Bernoudy, academic counselor for the College of Business. “The fair is even funded by the employers.”

“It gives the employers a chance to meet students in a more relaxed environment,” Tolar said.

For the third year, the NIU Educational Services and Programs sponsored the job fair.
