OCR offers fitness seminar

Aerobic enthusiasts of all levels can learn more about aerobics Saturday during a fitness training seminar offered by the Office of Campus Recreation and Club Aerobics.

Fitness Instructor Debbie Reichenbach will lead the seminar.

Reichenbach, a former midwest National Aerobic Champion and the choreographer for a Chicago Bears halftime show, is known for presenting dynamic workshops for training and development of fitness instructors, said Fabian DeRozario, coordinator for Club Sports and Fitness.

The three-part seminar will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the OCR, DeRozario said.

The first part of the program will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants will learn basic physiology, such as how the body burns energy and what happens to the body during exercise in simple terminology, he said.

During this time, the instructors also will discuss the components of teaching an effective aerobics class, he said.

The second part of the program will be from 11 a.m. to noon. Reichenbach will discuss safe and harmful exercises, DeRozario said. With changing research, it is important to be updated on exercise methods, he said.

The last part of the program will be from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Reichenbach will teach methods to increase muscular strength and endurance with low-impact aerobics. Since more people are realizing high-impact aerobics are dangerous, low-impact aerobics are becoming more popular, DeRozario said.

Today is the deadline to register for the seminar, he said. The cost is $15 for NIU students, $20 for faculty and staff and $25 for other community members.

The seminar will cost $5 more for registration on Saturday.
