GLU to hold rally protesting ROTC

A demonstration aimed at encouraging the Reserve Officers Training Corps to amend its discrimination policy will be held today, a Gay/Lesbian Union spokesperson said.

“The demonstration is to encourage the ROTC and students to be aware of what’s going on,” said Theresa Brown, special interest adviser for the GLU.

The rally comes a year after the NIU University Council passed a resolution warning the ROTC to admit homosexuals into their programs before March 1992, or face elimination from NIU.

NIU student Sonya Wiley said the GLU doesn’t want to kick the ROTC off campus, because it won’t prove anything. “We’d rather see an end to discrimination,” she said.

Brown said the effort is part of the National Day of Action, a nationwide event which protests Defense Department policies barring homosexuals from military service.

The GLU has also been working on a letter-writing campaign to encourage military officials to change their views, Brown said.

“Our major goals are to change policies at the national level,” Brown said.

There will be speakers on the subject at the rally as well as an open mike for others to air their views, Brown said.

The proposed rally will be held from noon until 2 p.m. in the King Memorial Commons.
