Greeks to clean campus

NIU sororities and fraternities will join in the spring cleaning spirit when they appear on campus Saturday.

From 11 a.m. to around noon, fraternity and sorority members will unite to remove garbage and cans from the lagoons and academic buildings.

“We want to show a little greek unity and do something nice for NIU,” said Tom Gulino, Interfraternity Council vice president of Internal Affairs.

While sororities and fraternities all have philanthropies outside NIU which they contribute funds to during the year, this resembles an all-greek effort benefiting NIU, Gulino said.

While the “7th Annual Hunger Cleanup” will occur on the same day, Gulino said he doesn’t expect the “All-Greek Cleanup” to create a conflict.

The hunger cleanup, sponsored by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness and other organizations, will involve cleanup of DeKalb cites, while the sororities and fraternities will only clean the campus, he said.

Also, Gulino said he doesn’t think the hunger cleanup will be of the same magnitude of the greeks’.

“The nicer the weather, the more people will come,” he said. From 400 to 500 members of sororities, fraternities and the Black Greek Council have shown an interest in the cleanup, he said.

“It’s a nice way to kick off Springfest” and create a better looking campus, he said.

They will carry one garbage bag for recyclable cans and one bag for trash, he said.

“It’s a good way to show we’re out there for the community,” said Stacy Spletzer, president of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.

Spletzer said she expects a good turnout from her sorority and from other people who will be attending their formal that day.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Greg Bonner, vice president of the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

“The attitude about it is pretty positive from what I’ve heard at the IFC and around our house,” Bonner said. He said about 20 members from his house will be attending.
