Committee might not see decision

The University Council’s Rules and Governance Committee will have its first meeting today since the opposers of a controversial proposal were given a chance to speak.

However, the proposal to give the UC authority to approve and amend the Student Judicial Code will not be the only thing on the agenda.

The committee has other business to deal with, so a decision to recommend that the UC enact the proposal might not be reached today.

The open meeting will be held today at 4:30 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Heritage Room.

Last Friday, 17 opposers to the proposal spoke to the committee urging them to keep things as they are. No one unopposed to the proposal spoke to the committee.

Currently, the Judicial Advisory Board makes changes to the code and then gives them to the UC to read over before they give them to the president for final approval.

English Professor James Giles, the creator of the proposal, said he wants to establish a relationship between the UC and the code. He said the council has always looked over code changes, but could never do anything with them.

Many of the committee members are unsure of the way the proposal is worded and others have different ideas which might work better.
