Council looking for location for meeting

The chairman of the University Council’s Committee B said he is not sure where their meeting will be held to vote on the council’s authority over the Student Judicial Code.

“I’m not sure. It’s not easy to get a room because rooms are used all the time. You have to find a room you can fit everyone in,” Chairman Norman Magden said.

However, NIU Student Regent Jim Mertes said, “In my experiences with the university in that regard, I’ve never had a problem finding a location of a meeting room well in advance of the meeting.”

Council member Robert Suchner, a sociology professor, doesn’t think it would be difficult to find a room for the 4:30 p.m. Friday meeting either.

“At 4:30 it shouldn’t be that hard to find a room. Anyway, it’s up to the chairman,” he said.

“They could always use a classroom,” Suchner said.

A spokesperson for the Holmes Student Center said finding a room Friday afternoon would not be difficult, especially if given two days notice.

He said the meeting was tentatively scheduled for Lowden Hall, and students would attend this meeting.

The meeting will be held when scheduled because it is the only time committee members can get together at the same time, Magden said.

“Committee B always meets on Friday afternoons. We were trying to meet everyone’s schedules and had trouble at 3 (p.m.),” he said.

Whether or not the code will be voted on depends how the meeting goes, Magden said.

“The issues will be discussed. There’s no guarantee we’ll take a final vote. We’ll proceed and review the issues,” Magden said.

Suchner said he presumes the issue will be voted on because of the students attending.

As the system currently stands, the Judicial Advisory Board makes changes to the code and allows the UC to review the codes as a courtesy. There is an equal amount of student and administrative members in the JAB.
