Blood drive draws high turnout

Fifteen campus organizations teamed up last week in a philanthropic effort organized by the Student Association.

The SA sponsored a campus-wide blood drive last week drawing blood from 270 donors and support from many others who were turned away because of flu or cold symptoms.

While the event fell short of topping the NIU record for blood drive donations, SA Public Relations Adviser Lara Cipolla said she is pleased with the turnout from both the SA senate members and campus organizations.

“Last year’s record was set in April,” Cipolla said. Considering the time of year, the number of donors should be considered an accomplishment, she said.

The campus record blood drive remains 297 donors.

Delta Phi Epsilon sorority contributed the most donors with 25 members participating, while the SA itself had 20 members donate, Cipolla said.

The blood drive was an attempt by the SA to link all campus organizations together for a common cause, Cipolla said.

Several other SA sponsored events are planned for the semester including the housing bazaar, NIU Taste, and the Pack the Stands women’s basketball game.
