February is Black History Month, a time where people celebrate the history, culture and contributions made to America by African-Americans.
NIU students provided their thoughts on what Black History Month means to them.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Jaylah Moore, a junior finance major, likes to share her culture with her friends.
Q: “What are your thoughts about Black History Month?”
A: “I think Black History Month is a great way to keep Black history being retold so that we don’t forget all of the hardships and the discrimination that Black people went through in America, and I think it’s a great way to keep our culture alive as well.”
Q: “What does Black History Month mean to you personally?”
A: “To me, Black History Month means just taking time to learn more about the history and it means sharing my culture with my friends and just having fun.”
Dejah Marshall, a senior psychology major, likes to express her creativity.
Q: “What are your thoughts about Black History Month?”
A: “I think Black History Month is a great way for the Black community to be represented. You know, we’re so multifaceted. We do art, graphic design, painting, biochemistry, you know, we’re so intricate, and I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to really display Black talent on campus.”
Q: “What does Black History Month mean to you personally?”
A: “To me, personally, it’s just a way to express my creativity. You know, allow myself to help others through my creativity and have that displayed to the rest of the Black community. And, you know, us just collaborate together on all of the talents that we have.”
Nate Collins, a junior illustration major, believes Black History Month is necessary.
Q: “What are your thoughts about Black History Month?”
A: “I think it’s something that very much is a very necessary thing in terms of the history in this country that we have, in the ways that, you know, Black people have been treated.”
