As the brutal cold of winter has consumed DeKalb, the longing for spring and warmer weather is increasing. The cold weather is not fun for students who must walk outdoors to get to class.
NIU students provided their thoughts on the recent cold weather and how it has been impacting them.
Matt Agnew, a junior sport management major, gets cold really easily.
Q: “How has the cold weather been affecting you recently?”
A: “This cold weather is terrible. I have to walk to all my classes and it’s pretty far from my dorm, so it’s really bad, on my hands, they get really dry. I get cold really easily, so it’s not fun. I don’t look forward to getting up in the morning to know I have to walk outside in what feels like negative 20 degrees.”
Emily Hernandez, a first-year accountancy major, doesn’t like the walk in the cold from DuSable Hall to Barsema Hall.
Q: “How has the cold weather been affecting you recently?”
A: “For me, I have to walk to Barsema from DuSable. So, I hate it because it’s a 15-minute walk in the cold and I just don’t like it.”
Jimena Cabrera, a junior biology major, makes sure to wear gloves.
Q: “How has the cold weather been affecting you recently?”
A: “I’ve been freezing. So, every time I walk to class, I make sure to have gloves on, but most of my face is always really, really cold.”
Q: “Could you detail your commuting experience here?”
A: “It’s not too bad. I make sure to turn on the car, but I think just going back home has been like I’m freezing inside of my car, making sure that it’s really warm.”
Santiago Cordoba, a first-year business administration major, doesn’t like going to his 8 a.m. class in the cold.
Q: “How has the cold weather been affecting you recently?”
A: “Mainly, just, like, getting out of bed and, like, going to my 8 a.m. class. That’s like the worst part, and then I commute.”
Q: “Could you detail your commuting experience here?”
A: “I don’t know, obviously, like I’m driving in a cold car because I wake up late. The roads are obviously, like, really salty or there’s a lot of snow and ice.
