Judicial Codes to change

Stiffer penalties for cheating and insults will dominate today’s University Council meeting.

Some of the language in the University Judicial Code will be changed at the request of the Judicial Advisory Board, said University Council Executive Secretary J. Carroll Moody.

The meeting will be in the Holmes Student Center’s Clara Sperling Sky Room at 3 p.m.

One proposed change up for discussion is a code which currently requires a written report within ten academic days for an alleged Class I offense or six months of a Class II offense. Otherwise no judicial action can be taken or a file opened.

The proposed addition to this code excludes incidents involving academic misconduct, allowing cases to be filed thirteen months from the time the incident occurred.

Another proposed change is an addition to the title of one of the codes which would make the code more explicit, Moody said.

The title in question would change from “Harassment of a Group” to “Harassment on the Basis of Race, Ethnicity, Religion, Gender, Sexual Orientation or Disability Status,” Moody said.

Other than the title, the code would remain the same. The code restricts individuals from “acting in a manner that intentionally harasses, coerces, intimidates, threatens or seriously embarrasses” anyone on the basis of these characteristics.

However, Moody said arguments sometimes arise over who has jurisdiction in such code changes.

“It’s not entirely clear what the University Council has over making code changes,” Moody said.
