Foss, NIU cruise past Raiders

By Steve Dennis

Lisa Foss etched her name in the Huskies’ record book Thursday night as the NIU women’s basketball team pounded Wright State, 91-52.

In an otherwise uneventful contest, Foss displayed why she is being considered for a spot on the All-America squad. The senior notched NIU’s 81st point of the night, but more importantly recorded her 2,000th point as a Huskie.

“It’s definitely a reward for someone who’s probably the biggest gym rat in the entire world,” NIU coach Jane Albright said. “I still will say again that I think (Lisa) is the best shooter in the game, period—man or woman.”

With the Raiders in a diamond-and-one defense, which is designed to shut down a leading scorer, Foss lit up Chick Evans Field House by canning 12 of 19 shots from the field including a perfect percentage from the charity stripe.

“Twelve for 19 is a pretty nice percentage to break that record,” Albright said. “I’m not a math major, but I’d have to say that’s pretty good shooting.”

It seemed only fitting that Foss reached the plateau on a steal and a break-away lay-up with the assist going to co-captain Toby Meeks. All year long, Albright has been praising Foss as an all-around player.

Besides the 25-point output, which coincidentally is just an average day for the senior (25.4 points per game), Foss came up with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot—the first stuff of the year.

“Oh my gosh,” Foss whispered as she glanced at the box score, “I got a block. I finally lost my goose egg in that category.”

The rest of the Huskies combined to shoot 52 percent for the game, while forcing the North Star Conference foes to commit 30 turnovers and shoot a meager 31 percent.

“Our identity here at Northern should be two things: it should be that we are a fast-breaking team and it should be that we have a great half-court defense,” Albright reiterated. “And tonight, I thought we proved to be an exceptional team in those two areas.”

Wright State must have felt wrong the entire evening because if Foss wasn’t doing the damage, her relief was. Deb Teske came off the bench to tally a dozen points. Two other Huskies, Cindy Conner and Angela Lockett, both reached the double-digit mark with 10 points apiece.

Tracy Mondek chipped in nine points and seven caroms before fouling out with 3:15 left in the no-contest. Denise Dove and Dee Dee Jeske both had eight points, Meeks added seven and Tianna Burkholder rounded out the balance with a bucket of her own.

With the triumph, the Huskies upped their season record to 10-4, while moving their conference mark to a perfect 3-0. Even more noteworthy is the fact that it was NIU’s 18th straight NSC win.

Next up for the Huskies is the 2nd highest scoring team in the nation, Valparaiso. That NSC match-up is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at Valpo. The game can be heard live on WKDI (93.5 FM) and Channel 8 on DeKalb’s T.V. Cable system.
