SA senator remains on petition

One of the Student Association senators who called for the resignation of SA Vice President Tanya Smith is not taking his name off the petition.

Sen. Paul Fabrizius, the only one of five senators to stick with the impeachment drive, said he still believes Smith is not the right person for the job.

“I don’t want to be a part of it anymore,” said Sen. Kelly Marie McDonald, who withdrew her name. “This impeachment took too much of my time already.”

Fabrizius made his decision Wednesday morning after talking with Smith Tuesday night. “Now that I have had an hour interview with Tanya Smith, I think the impeachment is the right thing,” he said.

Smith had not talked to Fabrizius on Wednesday and refused comment.

Sen. Sadia Ahmed, who was not on the original list, said she is adding her name to the impeachment notice. “The reason … is because I’m really upset for the reason why the impeachment was withdrawn,” Ahmed said.

Fabrizius said Sen. Mike Ruderman met with Smith and told Fabrizius that the vice president would try to improve things stated in the notice. If she could not, she would resign from the vice president’s position, Fabrizius said.

Ahmed said she attended a meeting Monday night between Smith and the signers of the impeachment notice. Ahmed said Smith tried to hide the fact that the agreement was signed.

“She went around the room and said she didn’t want the other senators to know about this and asked if we would agree to keep quiet,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed said she didn’t know what the group was talking about at first and Smith assumed she knew about the signed agreement. After Ahmed questioned the discussion, Smith denied any signed agreement.

Smith said she has not talked to Ruderman about their differences yet “and that’s really all I have to say about it.” Fabrizius said the letter has “disappeared” and Ruderman and Smith claim it was a verbal agreement.

“If she (Smith) would have been honest about this letter in the first place, I never would have brought this forth at all,” Ahmed said. “The original purpose was for the entire senate to have the decision of whether to impeach or not and not just four people.”
