Impeachment notice issued

Student Association Vice President Tanya Smith was served an impeachment notice Thursday signed by six SA senators.

Sen. Mike Ruderman said the impeachment is a needed step because just asking for Smith’s resignation rather than trying to impeach her would make the SA look inefficient.

“To convey this information to senators and then turn around and ask Tanya to resign would take too long and would show how inefficiently the senate is working so far this semester,” Ruderman said.

Smith said the whole issue is a waste of time. “I think it’s (the impeachment petition) not based upon fact and I have proof and documentation to substantiate my position on each of those points.” It wastes senate time to deal with “non-factual” and “hearsay” information, Smith said.

But Ruderman said, “The bottom line is the facts speak for themselves.”

Sen. Kelly Marie McDonald, who signed the petition, said she and others are not trying to sell the idea to other senators. “In presenting the fact, we hope the senate would be able to come to an educated decision,” she said.

According to the notice, which was given the all the senators:

Smith refuses to work with the executive board or to attend staff meetings, which she deemed inconvenient.

Smith has failed to adequately execute the duties as liaison to the Illinois Student Association. The ISA furnishes information to the executives and the senate, but senators said they feel “not receiving this important data … is detrimental to this body.”

‘Smith misinformed the senate when she said she lost the resignation allowing former Sen. Jody Jancaric to return.

‘The vice president should prepare an agenda before every SA meeting and has not done this.

According to SA Treasurer Michael Holy, while Smith was on a two-week absence, she continued to accumulate pay despite her lack of attendence. “This receival was conditional on the provision she would increase her office hours over the next two weeks by 45 hours,” the notice stated.

Smith pursued “overly stringent” guidelines for giving organizations SA recognition.

The senators said they feel Smith ineffectively chairs the Internal Affairs Committee.

The vice president should ensure elections run smoothly. In the senators’ opinion, elections did not go well.

Smith did not “perform any additional functions assigned by the executive board or the senate,” by not posting her office hours.

Because notices of impeachment must be submitted 10 days before senate consideration, the notice for Smith will reach the senate Nov. 18. She can make a presentation and question the action against her.

Removal from office requires a two-third vote of the senate.
