Little Shop of Horrors’ to satisfy audience appetites

The smash hit musical “Little Shop of Horrors” is coming to DeKalb.

From Oct. 24 through 27, 29 through 31 and Nov. 1 through 3, NIU’s Department of Theatre Arts will present 10 performances of the musical version of the cult film by Roger Corman.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is the story of Seymour, the lowly assistant to a florist, Mr. Mushnik. After a total eclipse of the sun Mushnik obtains a unique and never before seen plant which needs blood to grow.

Seymour names the plant Audrey II, after the flower shop’s flower arranger, and tries to satisfy its voracious appetite by feeding it human flesh. As a result the plant continues to grow to immense proportions, then begins to sing and dance.

The “Little Shop of Horrors” stars Rick Litton as Seymour, Jennifer Ray as Audrey, Alan Bernstein as Mr. Mushkin, Michael P. Derry as Orin; Joann Mueller, Linda Schaefer, Elizabeth Fletcher, Bruce Pilkenton and Sean Higgins as movement for Audrey II and Richard L. Richards, Jr. as the voice for Audrey II.

This production of “Little Shop of Horrors” is directed by Patricia Lin Ridge and choreographed by Gary Flannery. The musical director is Elwood Smith and the costumed were designed by Albert D. Tucci. Production Stage manager is Steve Reily.

This show also features the setting created for the Broadway World Tour to Japan and lighting by Betsy Cooprider-Bernstein.

The “Little Shop of Horrors” production is made possible by donations from both First of America Bank and Glidden Florists and Gifts.

“Little Shop of Horrors” will be presented in the Stevens Building O’Connell Theatre and show time is at 8 p.m.

The ticket box office, also located in the Stevens Building, opened Oct. 17 and hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are also available for one hour before each performance.

Ticket prices are $12 for general public, $10 for NIU students, faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $7 for children under 12. Group rates and gift certificates are available at the box office.
